Laurel is a reading teacher for kindergarten through grade four — a position she’s held for eight years.  Prior to that, Mrs. Collins taught elementary and middle-school vocal music for a number of years.

Recently, Laurel was:

    • A presenter at the International Reading Associations 34th Plains Regional Convention in Overland Park, Kansas
    • A presenter at the Wisconsin Chapter of the International Dyslexia Association’s State Convention, 2006 and 2007
    • A guest lecturer/master teacher for trainees of an Orton/Gillingham-based method, sponsored by Nicolet College/Viterbo University/Northern Wisconsin Literacy Task Force, Rhinelander, Wisconsin; summers of 2007 and 2008
    • A leader of professional development workshops and training sessions for parents and teachers in Wisconsin, 2004 – present

Her publications include:

    • "A Match Made in Heaven," Wisconsin State Reading Association Journal, Spring 2006, Vol. 46, No. 2
    • "The Child: A Literary Journey," Wisconsin State Reading Association Journal, Summer 2007, Vol. 46, No. 3
    • "The Reading Strat Rap" (a poem), Wisconsin State Reading Association Journal, Spring 2006, Vol. 47, No. 2

Laurel and her husband, Jess, live on their hillside home overlooking the peaceful Red River Valley on her family farm in northern Wisconsin.  Laurel enjoys visiting her children and grandchildren, camping and long walks with her husband, reading and writing; but the passion of her career is teaching.

What Attendees Say

"Loved your presentation! You had such a great rapport with your adult audience — after all, how many people can get a roomful of strangers singing about the letter A within the first five minutes of a presentation?  I was practically jumping out of my seat thinking of getting back to my students and trying some of your musical magic with them."

——Randy, Classroom Teacher

"Recently, I had the pleasure of hearing Laurel Collins present at the state conference of the Wisconsin Branch of the International Dyslexia Association.  She is a dynamic, well-organized speaker.  This quiet, reserved woman turned into an energetic, enthusiastic person as she demonstrated her materials clearly and simply."

——Leonore, Ed.D., Professor Emerita

"I was so interested in the data regarding Laurel’s success in getting children reading that I switched my afternoon workshop to hear her presentation.  I was not disappointed! Her enthusiasm is inspiring.  It was definitely the highlight of my two days at the conference.  I purchased her materials and am already incorporating her teaching techniques with the dyslexic students I am tutoring."
