Touch the Sound
Abstract concepts (things
unable to be seen or felt) often prove challenging to a child still young
or one who is at-risk. Hand signals provide something concrete a child can
associate with an abstract concept; which in this case are the alphabet
letter sounds. When vocalization of the letter sounds (auditory) and
alphabet flashcards (visual) are combined with hand signals
(kinesthetic/tactile), a multisensory experience is the result. And since Touch
the Sound involves all three, it truly is a multisensory approach to
learning alphabet letters and the sounds they represent.
The 26 songs on the CD
each contain an alphabet letter name and the isolated sound, or sounds,
those letters represent. This permits the child to perform the hand
signals while singing. But the CD serves two other purposes as well.
First, music is just plain fun… and fun is good, especially when working
with young children. Second, the repetition inherent in the songs, aids in
retaining new information in short-term memory long enough for it to be
transferred over into long-term memory where it is then stored for later
recall. It would be difficult, indeed, to find another medium – other
than music – where a child can receive the same number of repetitions in
the same amount of time and still leave the child believing he or she was
just having fun.

Mixing
– (Section 1) The blending of various colors of paint is
likened to the sounds that are created when specific letters
("consonant digraphs"), plus the QU phonogram, are
paired together. The short, interesting stories — along with
the hand signals, mnemonic illustrations, and accompanying songs—
allow students to rapidly master these buddy letter sounds.

Rappin’ the Vowels
– (Section 2) Students, even those who struggle to learn, will
quickly recognize which letters of the alphabet are vowels from this
rap-style cheer they’ll enjoy performing over and over.

The Bossy Vowel Game Rap –
(Section 3) "Yay! The
Bossy Vowel Game!" is the comment heard time and again from
students upon being introduced to this very innovative method
for decoding words. After learning the rules of the Bossy Vowel
Game (taught via the cool rap song on the music CD), children as
young as kindergarten age can readily "sound out"
words having two vowels next to each other (such as mail
or feet) or words in which there is only one consonant in
between two vowels (such as take or kite).

Big, Bad Buddy Letters
– (Section 4) When knowledge of the most common buddy letter
teams found in early elementary reading (such as OU/OW;
AU/AW/AR; OI/OY; etc.) are scaffolded through the use of
mnemonic illustrations and hand signals, student dependence on
adult assistance for the decoding and spelling of unfamiliar
words — even multi-syllabic words — is significantly
decreased.

The Word Skills package includes:
75 page Word Skills activities book that provides students
with the sequential practice, and thus the mastery, of the
concepts (plus many others) introduced in the Phonogram Phun
book
5 blue flashcards containing the vowels
20 white flashcards containing the consonants
20 yellow flashcards containing the consonant digraphs and
buddy letter teams
Word Skills – For
students to possess knowledge about early reading concepts is one
thing, but to have them truly mastered is really quite another.
Therein lies the purpose of the Word Skills book.
According to research; an explicit, systematic, sequential,
multi-sensory approach to reading instruction is beneficial for all
children, but especially so for those students who are at-risk
regardless of socio-economic status.
In keeping with that recommendation, the Word Skills
book begins by solidifying student’s automaticity of alphabetic
principles and the blending of sounds together. Continuing to build
on that foundation, the students are consistently and securely
scaffolded through a variety of early elementary reading concepts,
to include:
The most common buddy letter teams found in early elementary reading texts (important for spelling as well
as decoding purposes)
Instant recognition of Bossy Vowel Game words (see the
Bossy Vowel Game write-up (Section 3) under the PHonogram
PHun book opposite for further details)
Addition of word endings
Doubling the consonants
Prefixes
Suffixes
and much more…
The Word Skills book – in addition to giving the
students much needed practice in decoding words which include the
above concepts – also provides the necessary experiences for
spelling them as well.
Letter Flashcards –
The
packetwhich comes with the Word Skills
book, contains two sets of flashcards:
Alphabet letter flashcards for solidifying a student’s
automaticity of the letter sounds and for blending
exercises
Buddy letter flashcards to develop mastery of letter
team sounds plus their spellings.
