TOUCH THE SOUND is a unique musical, multisensory approach to learning alphabet letters and their sounds.  When vocalization of letter sounds (auditory) and alphabet flashcards (visual) are combined with hand signals, a multisensory experience is the result.   Since Touch the Sound involves all three, it truly is a multisensory approach.   The 26 songs on the CD each contain an alphabet letter name and the isolated sound, or sounds, those letters represent.   The great thing with this approach is, children won’t even know they’re learning, they’ll think they’re just having fun.

"I’ve used Touch the Sound with my kindergarten students for a number of years now.  The students love the songs and so do I.  More important, however, is the real benefit it’s been to those students who struggle – which is why I continue to use it from year to year.  It’s not unusual to hear a child at recess spontaneously begin to sing the songs and have others join in.  With this method, they really find learning the letters and their sounds to be fun, making this approach beneficial for all children."

——Emily, kindergarten teacher, Wisconsin

"We began using Touch the Sound seven years ago.  During that time there have been few students who graduated from kindergarten NOT knowing the alphabet letters and their sounds... due to the easy-to-learn hand signals and fun songs on the music CD.  Considering our poverty rate is over 70%, that says a lot for the effectiveness of this approach.  The kids love the songs and enjoy singing them over and over again. I highly recommend this method for any child or any classroom."

——Heidi, kindergarten teacher, Wisconsin

Steps for Success:  A fun-based, musical, multi-sensory approach to reading and spelling instruction makes learning these skills an enjoyable experience for the dyslexic child and those with specific learning disabilities (SLD), autism, ADHD, ADD, or any student at-risk for reading difficulties.  This approach is unique in that it combines colorful mnemonic (picture) illustrations; easy to perform hand signals; and lively, singable songs to assist students in mastering a variety of early-reading concepts, including:

    • Alphabet letter names and sounds
    • The Vowels
    • Consonant Digraphs
    • Common Letter Teams such as: ow, ar, ir, au, oo, etc.
    • Bossy Vowel Game words
    • Decoding (reading) strategies
    • and much more

Forewords written by Dr. Marcia K. Henry (Unlocking Literacy, Brookes Publishing Company),  past president of the International Dyslexia Association.

An ounce of prevention

is worth a pound of…

intervention, which for many students often comes too late.

Why not catch them before they fail?

Research Base

Appropriate for use with Response to Intervention (RtI), this approach uses as its foundation the well-respected research of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the noteworthy evidence-base of the Orton/Gillingham method.

Classroom Tested

Over 76 percent of the student body where Steps for Success was piloted qualify for free and reduced lunch.  Research indicates that children of poverty often display a proportionately higher incidence of poor performance in reading than do their non-disadvantaged peers.

Classroom data gathered over a period of several years after Steps for Success was implemented bear testimony of consistent gains made by disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged students alike and that this success continues in succeeding grades.  Additionally — and worthy of particular note here — the number of students qualifying for placement in Title I and Special Education services dropped dramatically the years following the implementation of the Steps for Success approach.

What Users Are Saying

"I swear it's like a switch in her brain has finally been turned ON!  The difference is absolutely awesome and so fast!  We have been working on all the new stuff each day!  Starting with the letters, sounds, etc., and then moving on to the Bossy Vowel Game which she LOVES!  She has named herself rap star Lil' Miff.  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!!!"

——Debralee, Home-school mom

"Given our high poverty rate, many of my students enter school not having the literary experiences necessary for a solid foundation in reading. Since incorporating the STEPS for SUCCESS approach into the curriculum three years ago, nearly all my students are reading at – and many above – grade level by years end. I can’t imagine teaching without it!"

——Stephanie, Teacher, Grade 1, WI

"I tried the Bossy Vowel Game with some of my truly struggling readers.  Within an hour they were repeating the rhyme and within two days were using it to decode vocabulary words!  The graphics are great and the music is wonderful."

——Randy, classroom teacher

"I scheduled a conference with my son’s teacher, because his reading grade was an S- for the first quarter and went to an O+ the second quarter.  That's a huge improvement and was wondering if his teacher was just being nice. . . .  She said, ‘No, I’m so impressed with how far he's come.’  How exciting!!  Reading still isn't his first choice of things to do when he's bored, but he also doesn't hate it anymore!  Spelling words are getting harder, of course, but he seems to be getting them without intensive studying.  Thank You!!!!!  Thank You!!!!!"

——Becky, mother of a second-grader

"Coming from teaching EBD/LD students at the secondary, I was unsure of what strategies to use with elementary students.  Steps for Success is so well organized, that after the initial training, I was able to step right in and use the kinesthetic activities, the visual posters and the auditory cues to help my elementary students be successful.  Thank you for this excellent tool for the classroom."

——Chris, cross-categorical teacher

"I like the STEPS for SUCCESS approach, because it incorporates the principles of multiple intelligences to teach reading and the students are active participants and learners with this method.  My students – many of whom would not benefit from traditional methods – are now engaged in kinesthetic, musical and linguistic activities, which greatly facilitate the process of learning to read."

——Emily, classroom teacher

"Our son was a normal happy little boy who loved to make people laugh.  When he began struggling with reading in 1st grade, his whole personality changed.  Sadly, we watched our little boy turn into this unhappy child who thought he was the dumbest kid in his class.  It became a daily struggle to get him to school each morning.  In December, he began the STEPS for SUCCESS approach with Mrs. Collins.  At that time he was at a pre-kindergarten grade level and within 6 months, was reading at grade level!!!  We never expected results this quickly!  He gained his confidence back and also his happy-go-lucky personality.  Our son is very bright but, being dyslexic, just learns differently.  I recently began using this program with my 4 year old son.  He quickly learned the short vowel sounds and knows many of his consonant sounds as well.  We're now working on buddy letters and he loves it.  He comes to me and asks if we can work on letter sounds.  I recommend this program for kids of all ages, whether they’re dyslexic or not."
